Prerequisites for Instructor Courses

Prior to enrollment, instructor candidates must:

  • Hold a current Provider certification card in the discipline they wish to teach
  • Be aligned with an authorized AHA Training Center accepting new instructors
  • Successfully complete the required Instructor Essentials online course prior to the in-person session
Not yet certified? If you are not currently certified in the discipline you wish to teach, certification training may be incorporated into your course program.

What You’ll Learn

Our instructor programs prepare you to confidently teach and manage AHA courses from start to finish. Across all disciplines, you will learn how to:

Plan, organize, and structure effective training courses
Deliver engaging instruction for classroom and blended (eLearning) formats
Lead hands-on skills practice and testing sessions
Administer written exams and evaluate student performance
Apply effective teaching techniques for adult learners
Conduct student remediation when necessary
Maintain instructor records and course documentation
Maintain certification and stay current with AHA standards

The course includes general instruction on teaching AHA programs, followed by discipline-specific instructor education.

Heartsaver®

Heartsaver® Instructor Course

Teach First Aid, CPR, and AED skills to the general public, workplaces, and community organizations.

Prerequisites

  • Current Heartsaver® First Aid CPR AED or BLS Provider certification*
  • Alignment with an authorized AHA Training Center
BLS

Basic Life Support (BLS) Instructor Course

Train to teach Basic Life Support (BLS) for healthcare providers and professional rescuers.

Prerequisites

  • Current BLS Provider certification*
  • Alignment with an authorized AHA Training Center
ACLS

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Instructor Course

Teach advanced cardiovascular life support skills to healthcare professionals in high-acuity environments.

PALS

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Instructor Course

Certification Process

All instructor candidates follow a standardized, step-by-step process:

Online Essentials

Complete the required Instructor Essentials online course.

In-Person Course

Attend a hands-on, in-person Instructor Course.

Skills & Exams

Successfully complete skills evaluations and written examinations.

Monitored Teach

Teach a provider course under faculty supervision and monitoring.

Once all requirements are completed, candidates receive their official AHA Instructor certification, valid for two years.
